Production Diary - Laboratory Eagle
The Laboratory Eagle, as it was to become known, first appeared briefly in the Season One story Guardian of Piri before its most famous appearance in Season Two’s story The Metamorph – both episodes featured actress Catherine Schell.
A specialised and significantly different design to the standard Eagle, The Laboratory Eagle carries equipment of a more scientific nature and is fitted with additional airlocks for decontamination purposes.
As our Studio Replica will feature a displayable interior, it was decided to create a more accurate Command Module interior and authentic pilot figures.
The interior is constructed in sections. Original Gemini pilot figures are used as the basis for the newly realised versions. (Note: small Eagle logo on pilot left arm WILL NOT feature in production as this is unique to Season 2 spacesuits.)
For authenticity and accuracy, original kit parts were once again tracked down that were used in the construction and kit-bashing of the original studio model.
The main body of the tooling master was constructed in Perspex with panel detailing in plastic.
The 'soft –docking' side doors were create by vacuum forming over a female mould or 'plug' to create the desired effect.
While shown here in painted resin, the small side attitude thrusters will be turned aluminium in production.
The base of the Laboratory Pod is constructed over a standard Cargo Pallet base. The main difference from the cargo pallet being the four support feet have a tapered / bevelled edge rather than a flat edge.
