THE HORROR... of licencing old properties!
Every license we have obtained as a company over 25 years was because we were huge fans of the show or films. Well, who isn't a fan of HAMMER HORROR?
Our plan was to produce a range of classic characters from the many iconic horror films by this studio, but things very soon started to unravel. You must remember this was in the very early days of retro collectibles, no one was producing mass market products from these types of shows back then, (you can't move for them these days!) and many of these old licences were a contractual minefield!
With regards Hammer, no one agent owned any one film. Some films were owned by multiple companies and in some instances, no one knew who owned what, and therefore who even had the rights to grant a licence in the first place!
After much time in meetings, on phone calls, talking to agents, even receiving a phone call one Saturday evening from The Lord of Darkness himself shouting at me, we decided it just wasn't worth the aggravation, nor was financially viable, to continue beyond our first release of Christopher Lee's Dracula.
Keeping in mind this was over 20 years ago, we are still very proud of what we achieved with this figure, and it was a huge success selling out all 5000 units withing months of its release.
The iconic new Hammer logo designed for us by friend and artistic legend, Graham Humphreys, (creator of classic cinema posters, The Evil Dead, Nightmare on Elm Street, to name but a few) is still in use by Hammer Films today.
