Movie Daleks

PRODUCT HISTORY

Premiered: 2000-2009
Edition: Sold out / Discontinued / Will not be reissued

With the success of our Classic Dr Who line, and as a huge fan of the two 1960's movies, it was a natural progression to look at producing merchandise from Dr Who and the Daleks and Dalek Invasion Earth 2150AD.

At this time, the rights for the movies resided with Canal Plus, who's UK office was based at Pinewood Studios. This was by far the most enjoyable and fun time I've ever had working with a licensor. Run by the wonderful John Herron, this was also the film and reference library for all Canal's properties. Many a fantastic drunken lunch was had at the Pinewood restaurant with hours spent rummaging around the incredible library opening draws and finding photographs from classic shows and films that hadn't been seen for decades. As a 16mm film collector, John would loan me numerous 16mm prints to screen at home - original Avengers episodes, At the Earth Core and of course the Dr Who movies.

John was a most generous licensor and open to numerous and varied licencing proposals. Some of which sadly didn't see the light of day - Talking Cuddly Movie Daleks, Movie Dalek Soap and even a stage production of Dr Who and the Daleks in conjunction Terry Nations estate, scheduled to open in Manchester in November 2005 and staring Bernard Cribbins in the role of the Doctor!

Movie Dalek Rolykins

As with our Classic TV Rolykins, these were a small 25mm Dalek and issued in a variety of colourways and launched at Liverpool's Day of the Daleks in 2000. The all-new Movie packaging by Graham Humphreys was by far my favourite he produced for us and was incorporated later in our Inflatable Movie Dalek packaging.

Micro Talking Movie Daleks

These were extremely well detailed and accurate representations of the Daleks from the second movie. Released in a box set of four classic colourways seen in the movie complete with a Tardis remote control handset. These featured actual dialogue from the movie and a pull pack friction motor.

Infra-Red Move Daleks

Not to be confused with Radio Control, these 8inch tall Infra-Red control Daleks from the first Dr Who movie were superb. Three versions were released featuring the classic colours seen in the movie. The first issue of the silver/blue Dalek had incorrect blue dome lights (oops) but was corrected in later releases. Again, most wonderful artwork and box design by Graham Humphreys.

Featuring actual dialogue and sound effects from the first Dr Who movie.

Radio Control Movie Daleks

Using the tooling from our 12inch Classic RC TV Daleks, we developed new parts and created the Movie Dalek variants taking the opportunity to upgrade all aspects of both of our 12inch RC Dalek ranges. Of note was the swapping of the soft plastic moulded collar with vertical slats to a more pleasing printed mesh with individual slats.

Spectacular new artwork was created by Graham Humphrey for all new Movie Dalek packaging showing the destruction of London during the Dalek Invasion.

A wonderful RC handset was included that was an incredibly accurate representation of the Dalek Saucer featured in the second Movie. These Daleks featured actual dialogue and sound effects from the second Dr Who movie.

Inflatable Movie Daleks

Yes - 4ft Inflatable Movie Daleks! We were a little hesitant about these but needn't have worried as they were a huge success. Three classic colours were released - Red, Silver and Black with the fourth, gold, produced exclusively for Get-Retro.

LAZER-ETCH Dr Who Dalek Invasion Earth 2150AD

A new and interesting technology at the time, the technique of internally etching blocks of glass with a laser seemed like a perfect fit for use within our collection of licences. We produced samples for Classic Dr Who, Thunderbirds and other Gerry Anderson shows, but only went into production with the Movie Dalek, Tardis and Dalek Spaceship as paperweights as well as glass keyring versions. We also released a version featuring Starbug from Red Dwarf as well as a keyring version.

Special Editions

Special Editions were released of the RC Movie Daleks in the form of silver Chrome and Gold Chrome versions. Several exclusives were produced of the Roylkins and micro Daleks while 500 x 24K Gold Plated Movie Micro Daleks were produced as a Show Special for the 2009 San Diego Comic Con.
