While not particularly fans of Red Dwarf, we did realise that there was a large following for this long running British Sci Fi TV show with non, or very little product in the market at that time. With licences for Classic Doctor Who and the shows of Gerry Anderson under our belt, we decided to widen our product portfolio and approached licensor Grant Naylor Productions.

Our first release was the STARBUG ELECTRONIC PLAYSET which was a fantastic micro playset that opened to reveal detailed interior environments, micro figures of the 4 main cast members alongside actual dialogue and original sound effects from the show itself. All housed in an amazingly detailed and accurate representation of the STARBUG spacecraft. We were particularly pleased with the packaging design which moved away from simply putting the product in a box.

A range of 6inch action figures of the main 4 characters were developed, as well as other play environments. The playset was a reasonable success, however obstacles within licencing and the approval process, along with our lack of excitement for the property, led to us moving our attentions, (and investments) onto other, more personally interesting propositions.

However, I still think the STARBUG PLAYSET is a nice piece of RED DWARF product history, and one yet to be surpassed for its excellence and imagination.
