It was long overdue. A range of High End, Deluxe 6inch Action Figures based on the characters from Space: 1999. With the talents of Master Sculptor Andrew Teal on board, we set about developing a range of prototype sculpts for approval, marketing and ultimately tooling.
Two obvious ranges were chosen. Charters in the classic Moonbase Alpha Uniforms and characters in the iconic Alpha Spacesuits. Except for female characters, repeats in the male uniform bodies and male spacesuit meant tooling could be maximized with character head tooling able to be utilized across both versions.
We set about developing the main characters for consideration: Koening, Carter, Russell, Bergman and Morrow. All five-character heads were sculpted along with a generic male and female Uniform body and a generic male Spacesuit body. Protypes were cast and painted, and the result was spectacular. The quality and likeness were beyond anything seen before in the world of Space: 1999 Collectibles. We were very excited to move forward with the range.
To our great surprise, initial reaction from collectors and retails was lukewarm. Pre orders, particularly for the uniform figures, were very disappointing to say the least, forcing us to reconsider our position on investing in their production.
The spacesuit figures had received a more positive response and determine that all our hard work would not be completely lost and recoup some of our significant investment, we decided to push ahead with a very limited and minimal release of 4 of the 5 characters in Alpha Spacesuits with accessories.
There is no doubt that these four Action Figures are simply stunning. The accessories such as the moonbuggy is beautiful. These are the among the best products we have produced in our 27-year history. However, as a business they were simply not viable.
After the months of work, development and financial investment in these and several other new products, combined with world economic shifts, it was becoming clear that the manufacturing of quality toys for an ever-decreasing niche collector market was proving financially unviable.
It was decided to step back for the time being from mass production and focus our talents on what we do best and what is commercially viable. We would move manufacturing of our Studio Scale History to our UK Studios and continue to create Hand Crafted Museum Quality Replicas.
